What oil does my car take? (And tire pressure, and every other spec)

Standing in the auto parts aisle staring at forty bottles of oil is a rite of passage — and a solvable one. Your car needs a specific viscosity (like 5W-30), a specific quality spec (API/ACEA or a manufacturer approval), and a specific capacity in quarts or liters. All three depend on your exact engine, not just your model.

Where to find your oil spec (the traditional way)

What the numbers mean

5W-30: "5W" is how thin the oil stays in cold weather (lower = better winter flow); "30" is its thickness at operating temperature. Thicker isn't better — modern engines with tight tolerances are designed around thin oils like 0W-20, and running the wrong grade costs fuel economy and can accelerate wear.

The spec/approval matters as much as viscosity: an oil can be 5W-30 and still not meet, say, a required manufacturer approval like dexos or VW 504 00. Check the bottle's fine print.

It's never just oil: the specs drivers actually search

Sold the manual with the car? Bought used without one? You're the exact person spec lookup tools were built for — and the reason WhisperCar auto-fills them.

The fast way: AI specifications in WhisperCar

WhisperCar turns the whole hunt into one screen:

  1. Register your car — make, model, year. That's all it needs.
  2. Open AI-powered specifications — the app auto-fills your engine details, oil type and capacity, other fluids, tire sizes and more.
  3. Verify with a re-check — one tap re-runs the lookup whenever you want a second opinion, so you can pour with confidence.
  4. Ask follow-ups in chat — "can I use 5W-40 instead?", "what tire pressure for full load?" — and get answers specific to your vehicle.
