Why is my check engine light on?
The check engine light (CEL) is your car's most vague warning: it can mean something as trivial as a loose gas cap or as serious as a misfire that's cooking your catalytic converter. The light itself doesn't tell you which — the trouble code stored behind it does.
Steady vs flashing: the first thing to check
- Steady light — a fault was detected, but it's not an emergency. Drive gently and get it diagnosed soon.
- Flashing light — an active misfire is sending unburned fuel into the exhaust and can destroy the catalytic converter within minutes to days. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and stop driving as soon as it's safe.
The most common causes of a check engine light
- Loose or faulty gas cap — breaks the fuel system pressure seal. Free fix: tighten until it clicks.
- Oxygen sensor failure — hurts fuel economy and can trigger codes like P0130–P0167.
- Catalytic converter efficiency — the famous P0420 code.
- Engine misfire — worn spark plugs, coils or injectors (P0300-series codes).
- Mass airflow (MAF) sensor — often from a dirty or cheap air filter.
- EVAP system leaks — cracked hoses or valves in the fuel vapor system.
- Thermostat or coolant temperature sensor — engine running too cool or too hot.

- Check the gas cap first. It's the one free fix. If that was it, the light clears after a few drives.
